Athabasca Glacier

The Athabasca Glacier is part of the Columbia Icefields which are on the Icefields Parkway, approximately half way between Lake Louise and Jasper.

I drove through it one winter night in the middle of a blizzard. It sounded like a freight train was coming at me. I was in my Volkswagen van which I had floored and it would only go 30 miles/hour.

When I finally reached the southern end of the parkway the RCMP had the road blocked and said to me “Where did you come from? This Highway is closed!” My comment was “Jasper, and it didn’t close soon enough!”
