about this painting
In the mid-seventies, I flew to the Arctic to photograph for a series of paintings I was to do for Panarctic Oil. I was based out of Resolute Bay. I was approached one day and asked if I would like to fly to Frobisher Bay with the local nurse on a medivac. I accepted.
We left Resolute Bay in a DC3. We had been flying for a while, and the co-pilot came and sat beside me. He said, “I don’t want to alarm you, but look out the window on the right. So I did and saw that the propeller was not moving. We made an emergency landing at Nanisivik and ordered in another plane, a twin otter which had to be fueled on board as the fuel tanks were not large enough to take us all the way. It was a smaller plane, and one side of it was lined with barrels of fuel. Next to them were the patient and the nurse.
The co-pilot set up a jump seat for me between him and the pilot. This was great as I had a grand view of everything. En route, we flew over Bylot Island. I was very impressed with its stark beauty and mountains, so I took a picture and painted it.
