about this painting

Back in the day – the early 70’s I travelled to the Yukon a fair bit and worked for a company called Midwest Diamond Drilling as an expeditor. On days off, I would travel and photograph the country.

One of the best modes of travel was to catch a ride with the truck drivers.

On one occasion, I decided to visit Atlin, B.C., and caught a ride with one of the Trimac drivers. He dropped me off at Jakes Corner. Jake had a gas station and was well known for being good with a gun, which I gather he used occasionally and not always in a friendly way.

So I decided to avoid Jake and camp in the bush nearby.

I always travelled with a duffle bag, a can of beans, a can opener, a spoon, a lighter, a package of cigarettes, and a sleeping bag. So I found a nice cozy little spot, ate my can of beans, smoked a cigarette, crawled into my sleeping bag, and went to sleep.

The following morning I caught a ride into Atlin, which is absolutely beautiful. I took a photograph for this painting on the way and painted it in 1980.
